The Rings (2004)

The Rings is a reactive light-based  sculpture installed in the glass atrium space above the Sauchiehall Street entrance of Buchanan Galleries in the city centre of Glasgow, Scotland.

The general idea was to introduce an ambient, calming effect into one of the busiest shopping junctions in the city centre through light that flows between each of the four rings. In addition to this I wanted to highlight the sound ecology of the immediate environment, which ebbs and flows throughout the day. With this in mind the artwork is designed to respond to different levels of sound in the street below. If a car horns sounds, or someone shouts or claps, the light activity will respond by flowing faster and flashing in direct response.

Stainless Steel rings,Blue LED lighting, Polycarbonate diffusers, interactive computer system (produced by Bob Farrell). Jointly commissioned by Glasgow City Council and Buchanan Partnership.
