The Rings

The Rings, Buchanan Galleries, Sauchiehall Street entrance, Glasgow, 2004

The Rings is a ‘reactive’ artwork located in one of the busiest pedestrian junctions in the city of Glasgow. Light slowly flows between each of the four rings - as a way to introduce a calming ambient effect into the busy shopping environment of this particular area of the city. However if the artwork is disturbed by noise or sound above a certain level it will respond by ‘echoing’ that sound in the form of pulsing light through the rings: In this way the sound ecology of the street is highlighted. The ’sound-to-light’ interaction aspect of the artwork has never been publicised as the intention is that people should discover it over time and learn about it by word of mouth. It is of course particularly effective late at night when the pubs empty!
